What Are the Commands of Christ?

There is value in meditating on every single verse in the Bible because “all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (II Timothy 3:16).

The Daily Success program focuses on the verses that contain the 49 general commands of Christ because they express the whole message of Scripture. Their basis can be found in the Old Testament Law of Moses and their application in the New Testament teachings of the apostles.

Each command has great depth and many applications, but can be further summarized by the two greatest commandments: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself. (See Matthew 22:37–39.) When considering the commands of Christ it is helpful to understand how they fit within the kingdom of God.

Four Basic Elements of a Kingdom:

  1. A King: The Lord Jesus Christ.
  2. A Jurisdiction: In His future kingdom, He will rule the world. In His present kingdom, He wants to rule our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength.
  3. Laws: The commands of Christ.
  4. Citizens Who Follow Laws: Jesus’ disciples.

The theme of Christ’s teaching and Paul’s preaching was the kingdom of God. Jesus told us to make it our first priority and Paul proclaimed it to both Jews and Gentiles. His final days under house arrest were spent teaching things concerning the kingdom of God. (See Acts 19:8; 20:25; 28:23.)
